Network access solutions provider Zhone has launched Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) cards for its MXK multi-service access platform (MSAP).
The company has revealed that its IEEE 802.3ah standard 24-port line cards for the flagship system would allow firms using the service to upgrade in preparation for migration to fibre networks.

According to the firm, MXK offers twice the bandwidth capacity of the closest competitor and is built to accommodate growth over pure-IP networks.
Erik M Keith, principal analyst on broadband infrastructure for Current Analysis, said the technology is useful to operators "who need to maximize copper assets now while future proofing their positions".
He added: "For today, EFM gives operators a cost effective and rapid means of delivering 10 to 45Mbps to approximately 75 per cent of sites in the US and 80 per cent of sites in Europe that are still underserved by fibre."

Broadview Networks recently expanded its deployment of Actelis Network's EFM solutions to deliver reliable, high-speed broadband to its customers.
