The German arm of Vodafone has launched new Ethernet services through the country via an multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network, it has been announced.

Alcatel-Lucent's IP/MPLS technology has been used by Vodafone Germany to ensure the latter can allow its enterprise customers to connect to multiple sites via both Ethernet point-to-point and point-to-multipoint.

It is hoped the new services will provide an alternative to leased lines and virtual private networks.

Christof Hecker, Alcatel-Lucent's vice-president of sales in Germany, said the project took its collaboration with Vodafone Germany "to a new level".

He added: "More than ever Alcatel-Lucent's quality of service, reliability and service aware features found in our solutions will be critical factors in the delivery of mission-critical Ethernet Services to Vodafone's customers."

New Edge Networks recently announced the launch of a new tool designed to offer firms real-time quotes on the cost of MPLS network services, reports Phone Plus Mag.
