The move towards cloud computing will be a major transition in the IT industry, an expert has claimed, which could see a rise in virtualization solutions.
Peter Edwards, executive consultant for integrated service management at APAC, IBM, has highlighted the fact that this shift could be as significant as the introduction of the PC environment, Information Week has reported.
"With hundreds and hundreds of servers, people are not being able to manage them and are looking back at highly virtualized mainframes or other consolidated platforms. Many organisations see cost benefits from starting to consolidate things back," he said.
The way that IT departments are operating is shifting from a highly-centralised environment to a highly decentralised one will see an uptake in virtualization solutions, he suggested.
Tech Republic recently reported research that suggested virtualization solutions may gain popularity as companies look to minimise data centre sprawl and improve the efficiency of their operations.
