Researchers in the US have set their sights on creating a next generation network that will revolutionise the way the internet is used.

According to the scientists from the University of Illinois, Named Data Networking will simplify the development of web applications and encourage more businesses to commit to high bandwidth connectivity.

They believe that the next generation network solution will greatly improve how internet resources are used - allowing for easier distribution of applications as businesses migrate toward cloud computing and other virtualisation solutions.

Ty Znati, director of the computer and network systems division within the Computer and Information Science and Engineering department at Illinois University, said: "As our reliance on a secure and highly dependable information technology infrastructure continues to increase, it is no longer clear that emerging and future needs of our society can be met by the current trajectory of incremental changes to the current internet."

He suggested that a next generation network solution will be required if high bandwidth connectivity uptake is to continue unabated.

According to Cisco, the large majority of new internet connections will come from the developing market, suggesting that an infrastructure overhaul will be necessary in growing economies as well as developed ones.
