Businesses in Gulf will be able to access multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network services through a new project.

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and Tata Communications have officially confirmed they are to collaborate on the construction of the Tata Global network Gulf Project, which will see an undersea cable network deployed in the region.

As well as connecting the area to major business hubs across the globe, the network will support the use of MPLS-based virtual private networks and Ethernet technology.

Dr Nasser Marafih, chief executive officer of Qtel, said the network will provide high-speed bandwidth for all.

He added: "Most importantly, it will enhance communication security and reliability for the people of Qatar, adding significantly to our international cabling network."

Kuehne and Nagel recently signed a three-year extension with Orange Business Services to receive full MPLS services on its network.

The firm's infrastructure is based on leased lines, Ethernet and DSL technologies.
