Almost three-quarters of IT managers are failing to recognise the benefits that cloud computing could bring to their business, with many holding the belief the technology would not make any difference to their enterprise. A survey conducted by consulting firm Protiviti found that just eight per cent of respondents had adopted cloud computing for one or two services.

The study also discovered the most likely enterprises to be using cloud computing are larger corporations and those in the services sector. Most of the IT managers highlighted data privacy and security concerns for their reluctance to adopt the technology, while a number also cited reliability fears.

Managing director of Protiviti UK Jonathan Wyatt was surprised by the findings. "Emerging technologies and cloud services provide all organisations with opportunities to change the way they operate and ultimately to improve performance whilst reducing cost," he commented. However, this research appears to be at odds with a recent survey conducted by IBM, which indicated that 75 per cent of organisations are expecting to adopt cloud technology in the next two years.
