The market for 10Gbit Ethernet switches has grown by 300 per cent, according to new research from the Dell'Oro Group.

According to the IT industry expert, the market experienced a three-fold rise in demand during the last quarter thanks to the proliferation of dedicated access technologies.

The firm claims that top-of-rack technologies were flying off the shelves as businesses begin the biggest business connectivity upgrade the world has ever seen.

Alan Weckel, director of Ethernet switch market research at the Dell'Oro Group, told EETimes, com: "Customers are migrating servers from multiple gigabit connections to two 10Gbit connections."

He said that new technologies - such as Ethernet first mile and high bandwidth connectivity solutions - were leading to significant market transitions.

"These are significant changes which, when combined with vendor competition, will lead to [a significant shift in the Ethernet market]," he told the news provider.

According to Cisco's Evolving Internet report, emerging economies are expected to drive growth in high bandwidth connectivity in the future.
