Organisations can gain access to high speeds by making use of dedicated network access technology, it has been suggested.

Dave Elliot, senior product marketing manager for information management at Symantec, made the comment in a column for Computer Technology Review while discussing backups.

He explained that any firms using virtual server backups should use a storage area network, as those which just use a LAN are missing the pace that dedicated technologies can offer.

In addition, he outlined that such work will also lead to a "performance drag" on a LAN setup.

Mr Elliot added: "Make sure you know not only what you are backing up and where you are backing up, but also the path you are using to backup your virtual servers."

Recent figures released by Frost & Sullivan suggested that rising interest in Ethernet services in the US is being driven by demand for multi-protocol label switching and dedicated internet services.
