According to managed hosting solutions provider Logicworks, the technology can deliver levels of uptime and support that are unattainable with consumer-oriented IT solutions.

Carter Burden, chairman and chief executive at the group, commented: "Cloud computing marries the benefits of grid computing, where many computers are acting as one, with the benefits of virtualisation, where one computer is acting as many."
The group went on to say the shared environment is an attractive option for fast-growing enterprises, media sites, ecommerce sites and financial services portals.
Last week, Laura DuBois, research director for storage software at IT industry analyst IDC, commented that the take-up of cloud hosting services has already had an effect on traditional on-premise licensed software sales for disaster recovery solutions and archiving.

She went on to say that many firms are likely to put off data centre investment in the recession unless they can be sure of a quick return on their outlay.
